Adoro Te Devote is one of the most haunting Eucharistic hymns in the Catholic tradition, famous for its common use in both the Liturgy and in private devotion. Rooted in the Gregorian chant musical tradition, it does not unfold like a narrative, but moves line by line through a quiet act of adoration.
Althugh it is by no means casual, it is deeply personal, reflecting the inner state of a lover of Christ and honoring His profound gift of Himself in Eucharist given to us in the Mass.

Latin Text (Full Hymn)
Adoro te devote, latens Deitas,
quae sub his figuris vere latitas:
tibi se cor meum totum subiicit,
quia te contemplans totum deficit.
Visus, tactus, gustus in te fallitur,
sed auditu solo tuto creditur:
credo quidquid dixit Dei Filius,
nil hoc verbo veritatis verius.
In cruce latebat sola Deitas,
at hic latet simul et humanitas:
ambo tamen credens atque confitens,
peto quod petivit latro paenitens.
Plagas, sicut Thomas, non intueor;
Deum tamen meum te confiteor:
fac me tibi semper magis credere,
in te spem habere, te diligere.
O memoriale mortis Domini,
panis vivus, vitam praestans homini:
praesta meae menti de te vivere,
et te illi semper dulce sapere.
Pie pellicane, Iesu Domine,
me immundum munda tuo sanguine:
cuius una stilla salvum facere
totum mundum quit ab omni scelere.
Iesu, quem velatum nunc aspicio,
oro fiat illud quod tam sitio:
ut te revelata cernens facie,
visu sim beatus tuae gloriae. Amen.
English Translation (Public Domain)
I devoutly adore you, hidden Deity,
who are truly hidden beneath these forms:
my whole heart submits itself to you,
because in contemplating you, it fails completely.
Sight, touch, taste are deceived in you,
but by hearing alone it is safely believed:
I believe whatever the Son of God has said,
nothing is more true than this word of truth.
On the cross, only your divinity was hidden,
but here both your divinity and humanity are hidden:
yet believing and confessing both,
I ask what the repentant thief asked.
I do not see your wounds as Thomas did,
yet I confess you to be my God:
make me always believe more in you,
to place my hope in you, to love you.
O memorial of the death of the Lord,
living bread, giving life to man:
grant that my soul may live from you,
and that you may always be sweet to it.
Loving pelican, Lord Jesus,
cleanse me, impure, with your blood:
of which a single drop can save
the whole world from every sin.
Jesus, whom I now see veiled,
I ask that what I so long for may come to pass:
that seeing you with unveiled face,
I may be blessed by the sight of your glory. Amen.
What “Adoro Te Devote” Means
The opening phrase Adoro te devote means “I adore you devoutly.” The tone is set immediately: this is an act of adoration, not explanation or proclamation. It is intimate, communicating what is within us but also calling ud to a deeper engagement with the profound mystery of Christ present, made possible by His coming in history and uniting Himself to our human nature.
The hymn speaks directly to Christ, present but hidden under the appearance of bread and wine.
Eucharistic Focus of the Hymn
The key idea running through the text is that Christ is present, but not visible in an ordinary way.
The line latens Deitas (“hidden Deity”) expresses that clearly. The hymn returns to this idea multiple times. What is seen does not fully reveal what is there: the fullness of God!
Faith Beyond the Senses
One of the most recognizable lines is:
Visus, tactus, gustus in te fallitur — sight, touch, taste fail.
The hymn contrasts the senses with belief. It does not reject the senses entirely, but it places trust elsewhere: in what has been spoken and handed down, and our own faith which allows us to see with stark clarity.
Connection to the Cross
The hymn briefly compares the Eucharist to the crucifixion:
On the cross, divinity was hidden.
In the Eucharist, both divinity and humanity are hidden.
This is not explained in detail but allowed to affect the singer or listener.
Personal Prayer Within the Hymn
Several lines shift into direct petition: that we would believe more, hope more, and love more. These are not general ideas but they are asked for humbly and directly, in the context of intentional, deep prayer, and a recognition that the power contained in the Blessed Sacrament is capable of bestowing on us these incredible gifts.
We are simultaneously challenged to cooperate with the grace present to us, uniting ourselves and our wills and desires with the precious gifts of Heaven, learning to value these over all other earthly gifts that can sometimes distract us. Before the profound mystery of the presence of Christ, we are able to soften our hearts to the truths of Heaven.
Why the Hymn Has Endured
Adoro Te Devote remains widely used because it is both simple and complete, beautifully balancing reverence and contemplation with joy and hope. It does not compromise the mystery but instead allows this mystery to gradually permeate our being while we stay in the Presence of the God of the universe, who has loved us so much as to give us absolutely everything in Himself.
